Relationship of histopathological findings of salivary glands to clinical and sialographical findings in Sjoegren's syndrome.

177 patients who were suspected as Sjogren's syndrome (SS) due to having dry mouth, dry eyes and/or another autoimmune disease were investigated, in order to clarify a relationship of histopathological changes in the salivary gland to clinical and sialographical findings in SS. 98 patients were indicat, d as SS by hitopathological examinations of the parotid and/or labial glands (Patho-positive group). Tlta salivary glands of 79 patients were not demonstrated of obvious changes histopathologically (Patho-negative group). The amounts of salivary flow from the parotid gland, stimulated by 10% citric acid, in Patho-positive and negative groups were 3. 4 ml/5 min and 3. 5 ml/5 min, respectively, and were significantly lower than that of normal healthy individuals (4. 5 m//5 min). 59% and 46% of Patho-positive and negative groups were diagnosed as havin, ; keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), respectively. 53% and 39% of Pathopositive and negative groups had other autoimmune diseases. 27%, 36% and 20% of the patients in Patho-positive group were classified as Class II, Cass 111 and Class lV, respectively, acccrding to Fukuda's sialographical classification for SS. 14% of Paiho-positive group were suspected as non-specific sialoadenitis and 3 % of the patients did not show any obvious changes sialographycally. 1%, 51%, 11% and 1 % of the patients in Patho-negative group were classified as Class I, Class II, Class 111 and Class W, and 35% of the patients were suspected as non-specific sialoadenitis sialographically.
