Though arthrography of the shoulder is a valuable diagnostic method in the investigation of the glenohumral joint, there are few reports of the findings of the normal shoulder arthrography. To define the appearance of the normal arthrography, single contrast shoulder arthrography was performed in sixty-six joints of thirty-three normal healthy volunteers. Regarding the direction of X-ray projection, the scapular view is helpful in outlining the glenohumeral articular surfaces and appears to have the advantage of evaluating arthrographic changes in each shoulder position since the glenoid is tangentially visualized and the scapula is always fixed to the film.Taking this advantage of the scapular view, arthrographic changes of the subscapularis bursa, the anterior pouch and the dependent pouch in each position were evaluated by measuring their width, depth and area on X-P films with the NEC PC-8001 and the tablet digitizer.Contrast leakage through the subscapularis bursa or along the bicipital sheath was observed in nine shoulders of them. Also no contrast filling with the subscapularis bursa in any position was observed in six shoulders. These were considared as normal variants. No laterality was found in each measurement. The more internally the shoulder rotated, the deeper the dependent pouch became. There was no difference in area of dependent pouch between each shoulder position, but area of the dependent pouch was larger in female than in male. Width of the subscapularis bursa in male was similar to that seen in female. The more internally the shoulder rotated, the wider and the larger the subscapularis bursa and anterior pouch became.
