The wear rate of copper cylinders rubbed by a running yarn was measured under various values of yarn tension by using the test apparatus described in the previous instalment. The purpose was to discuss the applicability of the laws of unlubricated wear to the experimental results.<BR>When the measured values of the wear rate are plotted against the equivalent normal load, the wear-load graph assumes a linear form below a certain critical value of the equivalent load. The laws of wear fail to explain the facts that the linear relationship ceases to exist in a range over the critical load, and that wear is more noticeable on the coming side than on the outgoing side on the cylinder.<BR>However, there remains another important factor. It is the effect of frictional heating, which softens and melts cotton wax on the yarn. Thus, wax is transferred to the surface of the cylinder to prevent its wear. In this way, the contradictory results mentioned-above are systematically explained.
