In the previous instalments the authors investigated the mechnism of wear of copper caused by running cotton yarn, and said that cotton wax played an important part in the wear phenomena. The authors chose copper merely as a sample of metallic guide materials for the convenience of experiments. However, non-metallic guide materials are widely used as parts of textile machinery. They are a poor conductor of heat, but very wear-resistant.
In the present paper the authors describe the results of the experiments on glass and porcelain. The wear-distance curves are not linear as in metals ; they show a very complex behavior. The main reason for this strange behavior is the macroscopic transfer of cotton wax onto the guide materials due to frictional heating. The non-conductive property of these materials enhances the transfer of cotton wax. Wax transfer usually takes place on the outgoing side of cylindrical guide material, a fact which confirms the author's theory on the role of frictional heating and the effect of cotton wax.
Another experiment has been made by using scoured yarn. As described in the previous instalment, commercially soured yarn is not completely waxfree. Hence the wear-distance curve is not different from that for grey yarn, but wax transfer is much less. Thus the importance of wax transfer in wear phenomena has been proved further.
