Clinical evaluation on the methods of Blue Starch Polymer and Caraway for serum and urine amylase

Clinical evaluation was carried out on the methods of Blue Starch Polymer and Caraway for serum and urine amylase assay. Normal values (mean ± 2 standard deviations) were as follows: serum amylase; 43.6-154.8CBU/100ml by Blue Starch method, 27.7-172.9 U/100ml by Caraway method. Hourly output of urine amylae; 31-267 CBU/h by Blue Starch method, 25-237U/h by Caraway method.Significant correlations of amylase values were obtained between the two methods; Y=1.40X-10 for serum, Y=1.05X+14 for urine (Y: CBU/100ml by Blue Starch method, X: U/100ml by Caraway method).Detectability of abnormally high serum amylase by Blue Starch method (62%) was superior to that by Caraway method (53%). Degree of serum amylase abnormality (ratio of observed value to the upper normal limit) was higher by Blue Starch method (1.52). Detectability of abnormally high urinary amylase output was not different between the two assay methods, but degree of abnormality was higher by Blue Starch method (2.52) than by Caraway method (2.00).
