The Validity of a Multidimensional Scoring Method in Aphasia Testing: A Review of the Data from 196 Cases

We administrated a modified form of the PICA (Porch Index of Communicative Ability) to 196 aphasic patients and studied the validity of a multidimensional scoring method in classifying aphasic patients' responses.The results were as follows:(1) By using a multidimensional scoring method, several responses such as related, repeated, incomplete, delayed, self-corrected and distorted responses which could not be detected by pass-fail scoring were seen in 20% of the total responses.(2) The percentage of these responses differed according to both the severity of aphasia and the relative difficulty of the sub-tests.(3) On the retest, the characteristics of the responses of the aphasic patients differed in quality according to the severity of aphasia although the responses were classified under the same category. That is, the patients with severe aphasia showed poor responses during the second test administration. On the other hand, the patients with mild aphasia showed the reverse tendency. The change in the latter group shows better improvement in these patients.
