Clinical study of inflammatory bowel disease developing in members of the same family.

The development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in members of the same family was studied in 75 patients proven to have either ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn's disease (CD).<BR>Five family members (6.7 %) subsequently developed IBD, i.e., 2 (3.7 %) of 54 family members with UC and 3 (14.3 %) of 21 family members with CD.<BR>These 5 members included one with first-degree, one with third-degree and 3 with fourth-degree relatives. Family members suffering from UC all developed UC. On the other hand, members having CD developed CD and UC in 2 and 1 members, respectively. Only one member had the same extent of disease. Age at diagnosis was 39.8 years in the probands, and 31.8 years in the 5 members. The interval for developmert of IBD ranged from 1 to 5 years after the initial diagnosis of IBD in 75 members.
