Short-term prognosis in 17 cases of ulcerative colitis was evaluated by UCAI modified from Crohn Disease Activity Index, measuring its value before and 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month and at remission after medical treatment.<BR>Fourteen cases (mild ulcerative colitis, 6, and moderate ulcerative colitis, 8) obtained remission by medical treatment showed a significant decrease of UCAI after 1 week of treatment. On the other hand, the UCAI of 3 severe ulcerative colitis, of which 2 underwent surgery, remained unchanged untill 9.7 weeks. The value of UCAI at 1 month was almost as same as that of remission period in cases obtained remission. The activity rate became less than 50% after 1 week of medical treatment of the patients with remission.<BR>Judging from the sequential changes of UCAI and its activity rate, we conclude that those having persisting high levels of UCAI should be taken, into consideration of surgical candidates.
