The initial study was directed toward examining the effect of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) on gastric blood flow of anesthetized rats, measured by hydrogen gas clearance technique. The GRP injected intravenously decreased gastric blood low in a dose related manner. But GRP in combination with atropine did not inhibit the response of gastric blood flow to GRP. This result indicates that GRP is an intramural neural regulator and GRP nerve is of noncholinergic neuron. The next study was aimed to clearify the change of gastric tissue GRP in water immersed stress rats and to investigate whether GRP stimulates to stress ulcer formation or gastrin release. The concentration of GRP was progressively increased up to 4-6 hours and returned to basal level afterwards. This response was not related to gastrin secretion, but the peak of GRP concentration was synchronous to ulcer formation.
