The mechanism of formation of ammonium adduct ion, [M+NH4]+, observed in ammonia chemical ionization mass spectra, was examined by using a selected set of compounds. It was found that the adduct ion is formed preferentially when the proton affinity of the substrate molecule is close to that of ammonia.
