Iridoid glycosides in "Sho-Jio", [Rehmanniae Radix, as collected] were quantitatively analysed by GG: the glycoside content in Sho-Jio from Rehmannia glutionosa var. hueichingensis was generally higher than that in Sho-Jio derived from R. glutinosa var. purpurea. However, the main glycoside was, in both of them, catalpol (4). During the preparation of "Kan-Jio" (dried root) or "Juku-Jio" (steamed root), the glycosides were decomposed to various extent. The extent of degradation depends upon the number of the sugar component in the glycosides: a triglycoside rehmannioside D (10) was scarcely decomposed., whereas diglycosides such as rehmannioside A (7), melittoside (8) and rehmannioside B (9) were reduced, in amount, to one-third, and monoglycosides such as leonuride (1), aucubin (2) and catalpol (4) were mostly decomposed. The aereal parts of those two plants mentioned above were shown to contain leonuride (1), aucubin (2), monomelittoside (3), catalpol (4) and dihydrocatalpol (5).
