Hemolytic and Piscicidal Activities of Dibenzylbutane- and Diaryltetrahydrofuran Lignans from Smilax roxburghiana

Five dibenzylbutane lignans (1-5) and five diaryltetrahydrofuran lignans (6-10) were isolated from a n-hexane extract of whole Smilax roxburghiana plant. Lignans 1, 3 and 6 were hemolytic. HC_<50> values for 1 and 3 were comparable with that of a commercial saponin specimen, but 3 gave rise to a unique, non-sigmoidal hemolysis curve. As for 6, a range of high concentrations was required to cause hemolysis. Lignans 7-10 were all piscicidal against adults of the Japanese killifish Oryzias latipes.
