An ethanol extract of E. catuaba was found to inhibit the cell-growth of mouse leukemia L1210 cells in tissue culture. Purification of the extract by silica gel column chromatography followed by HPLC led to the isolation of two cytotoxic flavanols cinchonains 1a and 1b which were obtained for the first time from this plant. These two flavanols exhibited cytotoxic activities (IC_<50>=ca 5.5μg/ml) on leukemia cells (L1210) in tissue culture.
