GC-MS Studies on Ester Components of Spermaceti

Seven specimens of spermaceti, collected in Herbarium of several universities, were studied by the GC-MS technique. They were classified into two types, A and B. Both A and B gave several peaks in GC, and each peak was shown to be of many kinds of saturated aliphatic esters by their MS peaks. Although the main constituent of spermaceti has been believed to be cetyl palmitate, the most abundant esters were cetyl myristate and cetyl laurate or cetyl palmitate (type A) and octyl stearate and octyl palmitate (type B). Type A was considered to be crystalline wax esters genuinely separated from head cavities of sperm whale, and type B to be crystalline wax esters of hydrogenated head cavities of sperm whale.
