EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF CIGARETTE SMOKE ON THE PHYSIOLOGICAL GROWTH, LIFE-SPAN, AND SPERMATOGENESIS IN MALE MICE

The effect of long-term exposure to cigarette smoke on the life-span, body weight and spermatogenesis in male mice was investigated. Forty-five male ddY mice weighing 20 g were divided into three groups: group A, group B and the control. Group A was exposed for 50 min a day, and group B for 25 min in a chamber containing cigarette smoke. The survival rate of the mice exposed to smoke for 360 consecutive days was for less (13.3-20.0%) than that of the control mice (53.3%), and the group which was exposed for a longer time each day (50 min) tended to have a shorter life-span than the group exposed for a shorter time (25 min). Physiological increase in the body weight of the exposed mice was considerably more retarded than that of the control mice. Microscopical observation of the testes after 360 days of exposure revealed oligo-or azoospermia. These results support a number of epidemiological data suggesting the harmful effects of cigarette smoke on the cardiovascular, respiratory and hormonal systems.
