SURVEY OF ACCIDENTAL BURNS AND SCALDS OCCURRING IN NAGOYA CITY -1979-

In order to clarify the conditions in which accidental burns and scalds took place, a survey was conducted on some 167 patients who were transported by ambulance to Nagoya City medical facilities in 1979. The survey, included data on the cause of the injuries, age, sex, degree of injury, location, season of occurrence and specific time frame. Hot liquids were the cause of 67.6 percent of the injuries, followed by fire (15.6 percent), burning clothing (6.6 percent), heat-conductive sources (4.2 percent), as well as other causes. Among the hot liquid causes were kettles, pots, baths, teacups and dishes, thermos bottles and cooking oil, in that order. Flame injuries involved lighting extinction , outdoor fires and indoor fires. Infants and children ranging in age from 0 to 4 years were frequently among those injured by hot liquids, accounting for 57.5 percent of the whole. Children from 0 to 9 years figured in the bath injuries, whereas persons 30 to 39 years of age most often suffered from hot cooking oil scalds. Burning garments were the cause most often with persons aged 60 or older (54.5 percent). Injuries in terms of sex were as follows. Men clearly outnumbered the women injured by fire, whereas the women scalds or burned by kettles or pots outnumbered the men. In either case, no significant differences were found. The more serious burns and scalds were caused by fires (excluding the extinguishing), burning garments and the like. Many whole-body injuries resulted from accidents in the bath or from clothing. Most accidents occurred in winter around dinner or supper time. The present findings differed little from the data obtained in a similar survey three years ago. Results thus indicated that prevention is a matter of closer inspection of the daily use items within the household.
