In this essay we will argue about the possibility and validity of Esperanto as the international language, rather than the world language, based on the idea that we should distinguish the international language, which aims to be used when the people whose native languages are different have to communicate with each other, maintaining their native language as they stand, from the world language, which aims to be used all over the world, abolishing native languages. We will present the three basic conditions to satisfy for the desirable international language as follows: (1) The ease of learning of the language (2) The language's neutrality and impartiality (3) The language's own rich expressivity It is true that English satisfies the above conditions fairly compared with other languages. However, it cannot be said that English satisfies them perfectly in that it is not always an easy language to learn because of having some irregularity in verbs and pronunciation and so on, and despite the fact that English has a marvelously rich expressivity of communication and that it has spread extensively all over the world, English is a native language for those who were born and have grown up in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. In that sense, it cannot be said that English is a suitable language as the international language. However, Esperanto is basically a regularity-oriented language which aims to become widespread as the artifitial international language all over the world, and has a sufficient expressivity for communication between people. Therefore, we regard this language as the better one for the international language, because we can assume that Esperanto satisfies the above three basic conditions of being the international language. The historic facts support the idea that Esperanto is the only available and popularized language as the international one, in that there are some Esperantistos in each country all over the world, though a lot of plans were made and presented by a large number of people from prehistoric days. In this essay, because of a lack of space, we are mainly concerned with the presentation of the linguistic outline of Esperanto, illustrating the regularity of the parts of speech including nouns, verbs, and pronouns. However, in our forthcoming essays, we are going to present some of the linguistic values of Esperanto as the international language from the point of view of contrastive linguistics. In doing so, the recent results of cognitive linguistics and semantics, pragmatics will play an important role in showing our assumption and principle.
