Glaucoma is a leading cause of permanent blindness. Retinal fundus image is a useful examination for early detection of glaucoma. To evaluate the presence of glaucoma, determination of cup and disc area is required. We propose a method to delineate automatically optic disc in retinal fundus images. In this method, the edge of optic disc is detected by use of a canny edge detection filter. Fifty fundus images including twenty-five glaucoma images were used for evaluation of the proposed method. The disc areas determined by this method were in good agreement with those determined by an ophthalmologist with the concordance rate of 86.2%. Thus this method can be useful for detecting optic disc in the glaucoma examination. Moreover, we developed a new method for distinction between glaucoma and non-glaucoma cases.
