Patterns of distribution of Ag-NORs in the genus Apodemus and their evolutionary implications

Chromosomes with Ag-NORs were identified by sequential G-band/ silver staining in seven species of Apodemus from the Far East, Europe and Central Asia. The G-banded and Ag-NOR-banded karyotypes of A. wardi were determined for the first time to our knowledge. A. speciosus had Ag-NORs only on chromosome no. 7; A. semotus had them on nos. 7 and 8; A. peninsulae had them on a B chromosome, as well as on nos. 7 and 8, and A. argenteus and A. agrarius had them on nos. 7, 8 and 12 and nos. 7, 8 and 22, respectively. A. wardi had Ag-NORs on nos. 8, 15, 16, 17 and 22; and A. sylvaticus had them on nos. 7, 8, 11, 15, 16, 21 and 22. The present and earlier studies indicate that the number of pairs of Ag-NORs in the members of the genus Apodemus varies from a minimum of one to a maximum of eleven with a geographic correlation: from one to three in species from the Far East including Japan and Taiwan and from five to eleven in West Eurasian and Central Asian species. These findings suggest that the genus Apodemus might have differentiated to two geographic directions with the number of pairs of Ag-NORs either decreasing or increasing.
