On the 4th of May, 1975, a part of vegetable fields, at Senjyu in Makubetsu, was suddenly depressed and became a big deep hole about 11m in diameter and 6.5m deep. Immediately after the depression, the authors accurately observed the hole and its surroundings and guessed that the depression resulted mainly from the effects of underflow. As the depressed hole was very near the farmer's house, the boring with 10m depth was done at a point between the hole and the house. As the result of the boring test, it was concluded that in the underground, unusual changes could not be found and the depression would happen no more. To check up the causes of the depression, the investigation of groundwater by both the measurements of the electrical depth sounding and of the underground temperature at depth 1m was carried out around the hole. Some spans of the measurements were set up between the hole and the large-scale gravel yard which was about 800m in the north-east of the depressed hole. The outline of subsurface structures of the investigating area and the course of the underflow were roughly estimated. From the results of analyses of the above data, it was concluded that the depression was caused by the unusual heavy snowfall during the winter season and the abrupt melting of snow by the warmth, and the mass gravel digging, especially very deep, to break the lower course of the underflow.
