It was reported in the previous paper that, instead of the "plate striking" method for an ordinary S wave prospecting, a simple apparatus for a source of S waves was tried. Again, the experimental tests for this source were carried out at Kushiro in Hokkaido. In the experiments, we had two spreads : one was named the SH-spread in which geophones were arranged with a transverse component and the other was the SV-spread. with a radial component. Three geophones were set at Δ=11m on a spread for three components (V, T, R). The directivity of a source was equal to that of the geophones in each spread. The charge amount in a laid steel pipe was about 10g of dynamite. (Fig. 7). Seismic records by the source were compared with those by "plate striking". In the SH-spread, waveforms of both records were very similar to each other, but in the SV-spread waveforms with explosion seemed more complicated than "plate striking". The S wave prospecting by explosion in a laid steel pipe became possible by the detection of SH waves by observation of the transverse component at the SH-spread as. shown in Fig. 7. But in this experiment a length of spread is very short. The future subjects are that (1) a larger amount of dynamite shall have to be used for prospecting of deep S wave structures, (2) an ordinary explosion of dynamite shall be tested for the source of S waves, as. well as P waves.
