In order to establish the seismic prospecting by means of S waves, various methods have been tried for some years. The "plate striking" method has been widely used for the S wave prospecting. But the source energy by this method was too small to prospect deep structures. Therefore, the author has, in the previous papers, used explosive sources in a laid steel pipe instead of the "plate striking". In this paper, experimental measurements of S waves, using an ordinary explosion, has been carried out. The present data were obtained in the co-operative experiment with members of the Seismic Exploration Group of Japan in the summer of 1967 at the old Lake Hachiro-gata in Akita Prefecture. We had two spans against a source and they were named T-span (transverse component) for SH waves and R-span (radial) for SV waves. The differences in waveforms between T- and R-span and between explosion and the "plate striking" were investigated. Four wave groups with different velocities were recognized on some seismic records and they were designated A, B, C and D in order of high velocity. From the relations between these wave groups anal the subsurface structures in the experimental field, wave groups C and D were identified as S waves. It was very difficult to get good records, in which everyone could distinguish the phases of S waves from various other phases. In particular, source conditions with shot depth and charge amounts were effective to generate S waves. In the future, it will be necessary to get and investigate more data of various conditions with ordinary explosions.
