A high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy has been widely used in a variety of autoimmune neurological disorders with a safety profile. The incidence rate of adverse effects is reported to be less than 10%. These effects are usually regarded as minor complications. However, a subgroup of patients may develop pompholyx following IVIg therapy. The objective of this study was to survey the incidence rate of pompholyx associate with IVIg therapy in the Kitasato University Hospital. We surveyed 34 patients with neurological disorders, who received IVIg therapy in the Kitasato University Hospital. Five of 34 patients with neurological disorders ultimately developed pompholyx, an incidence rate of 14.7%. While the IVIg therapy is relatively safe, its adverse effects are clinically important because of their high frequency. Althoughthe mechanism of the adverse effects in IVIg therapy is not completely understood, knowledge of the characteristic adverse effects of IVIg therapy is important to determine the clinical indication of IVIg therapy.
