Accumulation of Highly Toxic Ericaceous Diterpenoids by the Geometrid Moth, Arichanna gaschkevitchii(Organic Chemistry)

Adults of the geometrid moth, Arichanna gaschkevitchii, were found to store grayanoid diterpenes originating from the larval host plant, Pieris japonica (Ericaceae), in the body tissue. The compounds were characterized as asebotoxins I and IV, grayanotoxin III, rhodojaponin III, kalmitoxin I and two new analogs, arichannatoxin I and II. The content of the total grayanoid analogs in the body tissue was as high as 300μg/moth. The most predominant component, asebotoxin I (200μg/moth), strongly deterred feeding of house lizards, which suggests a defensive role against predatory animals.
