The aim of this article is to test the validity of "stimulus hypothesis" that is concerned with "dissociated learning" or "state dependency". Drug discrimination method was used to accomplish this aim. Before drug discrimination training, 14 rats were subjected to preliminary training about for 7 days. After this training, 10 rats were randomly allocated to one of four experimental groups. Rats were required to press a lever in appropriate response pattern (FR 30, DRL 10 sec, EXT) according to two drug conditions (PTB 10mg/kg i.p. vs. saline or PTB 5mg/kg i.p. vs. saline). Two standard treatments were given according to 2 alternating sequences, i.e., (1) S-D-S-D and (2) D-S-D-S. Drug administration was 20 min. prior to daily session. At the end of training session (26-36th day), rats showed typical response pattern under each drug condition. In following generalization tests, 8 rats that reached criterion were injected five doses different from training dose and observed response pattern. As a result, typical stimulus generalization curves were obtained. It was concluded that "stimulus hypothesis" was valid in part for explaining the mechanism of dissociated learning or state dependency. General discussion including methodology was followed.
