Nothing progressive decreases in the trabecular density of rib cancellous bone with age, we prepared ultra-soft radiograms of the trabecular part of rib cancellous bone, quantitatively expressed the decreases intrabeculae by image analysis, and developed an equation for age estimation based on the decrease in trabeculae. The study materials were the left 7th ribs of 180 females aged 20 years or above obtained by forensic autopsies. The percentage of the area occupied by trabeculae in a given area of the trabecular part of rib cancellous bone (bone mineral density) in au ultra-soft radiogram was used as the parameter for age estimation. The equation, Y=-0.937X+101.911, was derived by statistical analysis of the data(Y:Estimated age X:Observed bone mineral density). Theestimated age wase within ±5years of the true age in about 70-100% of the subjects and within ±8 years in about 90-100% of the subjects. These results warrant application of this method to age estimation of bodies of unknown age in the practice of forensic medicine.
