Usefulness of Collagen Gel Droplet Embedded Culture-Drug Sensitivity Test for Gynecological Cancers

In the present study, we examined the sensitivity of gynecological cancers to various anticancer agents using a three-dimensional culture method, a technique known as collagen gel droplet-embedded culture drug sensitivity testing (CD-DST). Cisplatin, adriamycin, paclitaxel (TXL), and an active metabolite of irinotecan, SN-38, were studied. We retrospectively investigated the relationship between the results of drug sensitivity testing and clinical performance in three patients with gynecological cancer treated with anticancer agents to which susceptibility was indicated. Treatment with appropriate anticancer agents, as determined by drug sensitivity testing, had a success rate of 65%, which is slightly lower than the success rates observed following treatment of other solid cancers with appropriate anticancer agents. Treatment with TXL demonstrated the greatest success: 67% for ovarian cancer, and 43% for uterine corpus cancer. Two patients responded to treatment (CR 66.7%), while one patient who was treated with PEP did not respond to treatment (NC 33.3%). The results of the present study suggest that drug sensitivity testing using CD-DST might be useful to determine optimal treatment regimens for gynecological cancers.
