Stress/Strain Effects in Advanced Superconducting Wires(Low-T_c Superconducting Materials Research)

An apparatus for measuring the stress/strain effect of superconducting composites at high field has been constructed. Axial strain dependence of critical current has been investigated on several advanced superconducting wires for high field application. The wires examined are Nb_3Sn, Nb_3Al and PbMo_6S_8 composites which are in the course of development. The effects of wire constitution related with fabrication process are also studied; the fabrication process included are the bronze process, the internal Sn diffusion process and the Nb tube process. Improvements of the strain characteristics in these wires through proper choice of parameters, such as stabilizer or reinforcement are briefly discussed. Transverse compressive stress effect on I_c In a Nb_3Sn wire at high field is also evaluated.
