The Direct Observation of Antiphase Domains of the Ordered Alloy Cu_3Pd by Means of Electron Microscopy

Two-dimensional antiphase domains of the ordered alloy Cu_3Pd (α" phase) have been directly observed in, single-crystal evaporated films by means of transmission electron microscopy. Split superlattice reflections, (010)_<cub> and (110)_<cub> groups, have been used to form images, the dark field technique being adopted. Two side lengths of the two-dimensional domains in several alloy films have been estimated from electron diffraction patterns to be 12-16 A. and 15-26 A., respectively. Several systems of parallel lines have been observed on electron-microscope images, and there are two definite values of the line interval which coincide well with the two side lengths of the domain estimated by electron diffraction. Crossing lines which have been obtained by using the (010)_<cub> group reveal most intuitively the two-dimensional domains. It has been concluded from distribution, of various line systems that six orientations of the domain structure, which were assumed in the structure analysis of the previous electron diffraction study, are present in the alloy films. Thus, the two-dimensional domain structure of Cu_3Pd has been confirmed by means of electron microscopy. Explanations are given also for the oblique lines and double intervals.
