THE EFFECTS OF HYDROCORTISONE FOR THE REGULATION OF LUTEINIZING HORMONE SECRETION : THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GAP JUNCTIONS AND CRINOPHAGIC BODIES

We investigated the effects of hydrocortisone on the regulation of luteinizing hormone secretion through the increase of crinophagic bodies within gonadotrophs. The male rats in experimental groups were given daily intraperitoneal injections of 10. 0 mg/kg of hydrocortisone from day 20 to 60. Five rats were sacrificed at ages 30, 40, 50 and 60 days; or 10, 20, 30 and 40 days after initiation of injections, and the pituitary gland was removed from each rat. Then, the specimens were prepared for observation by immunoelectron microscopy. The findings of the present study were an increase of crinophagic bodies within gonadotrophs on day 30, 40 and 50 in the hydrocortisone treated groups, simultaneous with the delay of gap junction formation between folliculo-stellate cells. The results suggest that hydrocortisone has a suppressive effect on luteinizing hormone secretion by the increase of crinophagic bodies within gonadotrophs. We therefore propose that this increase of crinophagic bodies within gonadotrophs is in part due to the disturbance of the dissemination of hormone secrertion-regulating information through gap junctions between folliculo-stellate cells.
