Inhibitory reflex responses of masseter muscle in anterior open bite

Animal studies indicated that loss of occlusal contact between maxillary and mandibular teeth causes altered functional activity of periodontal mechanoreceptors. The alteration of periodontal mechanoreceptors may influence jawmuscle reflex and masticatory muscle activity. In this study, the inhibitory reflex response of masseter muscle in subjects with anterior open bite was investigated. The study population included 10 subjects with anterior open bite with no muscle pain or craniomandibular disorders and 10 controls with normal occlusion. Twenty taps were delivered on the labial surface of the maxillary right and left central incisors while clenching at 10% of the maximal masseter electromyographic activity, self-controlled by visual feedback. The inhibitory reflex responses of masseter muscles were observed in electromyograms recorded with bipolar surface electrodes. Computer analysis of full-wave rectified and averaged EMG enabled the evaluation of latency, duration and amplitude of the inhibitory response. The latency was significantly longer and the amplitude was significantly smaller in anterior open bite group than in normal occlusion group (p<0.05), while the duration was not significantly different. The differences may have resulted from the alterations in the periodontal mechanoreceptors of anterior teeth. This finding suggests that occlusal stimuli are important in maintaining the function of periodontal mechanoreceptors and masticatory musculature.
