Tactile threshold in hypofunctional human maxillary anterior teeth

The purpose of this study was to clinically examine the influence of stimulation caused by occlusal mastication on the tactile threshold of teeth. Using 16 subjects with functional teeth and 15 subjects with hypofunctional teeth, we measured the tactile threshold of the maxillary central incisor, the lateral incisor, and the canine. Subjects with functional teeth (functional group) had occlusal contact, while those with hypofunctional teeth (hypofunctional group) had no occlusal contact on the anterior segment. To measure the tactile threshold, we used a cantilever-type microload device with a strain gauge. In the functional group, the average tactile threshold was 15 mN for the central incisor, 19 mN for the lateral incisor and 31 mN for the canine. In the hypofunctional group, the average values were 43 mN, 49 mN and 60 mN, respectively. For each kind of tooth the threshold in the hypofunctional group was significantly higher than that in the functional group. Consequently, these results suggest that occlusal function has a clinically important role in maintaining the normal function of periodontal receptors.
