Measurement of Acoustic Nonlinearity Parameter of Liquids by the Observation of Waveforms

A method for measuring the acoustic nonlinearity parameter of liquids by the observation of acoustic pressure waveforms has been presented. The crest of a finite amplitude acoustic wave advances from the crest of the sine wave as it propagates due to the nonlinearity of the liquid medium. By measuring the amount of advance, the sawtooth parameter and the nonlinearity parameter are obtained, using acoustic pressure amplitude, acoustic velocity, acoustic wavelength, acoustic frequency and the propagated distance. Measurements on six kinds of liquids were made and the results have been shown. The features of this method are the straightforwardness and the simplicity of the measurement.
