Propagation Direction of Step Lines and Classification of Line Families in KCl Single Crystal

In a KCl single crystal rapidly grown from the melt in a crucible, we observed step lines (stepwise striations) on the surface spontaneously cleaves. In the present paper, we discuss the propagation of these lines and classify various line families into three types:(A) the thermal type with the lines along the growth direction, (B) the crystalline-type with the lines related with the <100>-direction and (C) the stress-type with the lines along the stress-direction; an individual family is characterized quantitatively by two parameters a and b, related to the effect of the cooling-and the <100>-direction with respect to the stress direction, respectively. The present classification is discussed in relation to different macroscopic defects in the crystal.
