We have proposed a new and simple method for determination of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) orientation on alignment surfaces. NLC droplets on various alignment surfaces are observed using a polarizing microscope. The direction of the easy axis, the generation of pretilt angle and the tilt-up direction of NLC can easily be determined from disclination lines in the NLC droplets. The relationship between a flow-induced alignment effect and texture of the NLC on the alignment films with a weak azimuth anchoring strength is discussed.
