Electrical Conduction in Undehydrated Liquid Hydrocarbons in Low Electric Field

Electrical conduction in liquid hydrocarbons dissolved in a small amount of water has been observed using three types of electrodes under fairly low electric stresses of 100 to 1000 V. The electrical conduction is attributed to dissociated water molecules and the dependence of the permittivity of host liquid on the conduction is discussed. The observed voltage-current characteristics were found to be expressed as V=kI^n (n=0 to 2), while the current is strongly affected by electrically-induced convection.
