The working principles of an ion flyer are explained phenomenally using a simple model composed of a needle electrode and a ring electrode. A positive or negative DC voltage in the region of 0-2-kV is applied to the needle electrode, and the ring electrode is earthed. Thrust, discharge current, and beam current are measured under air pressure in the region of 20-101kPa. The maximum thrust is 4.6 mN for the applied voltage 20kV under atmospheric pressure. This ion flyer is useful in a low-gravity or zero-gravity state in an air atmosphere.
