The sum-peak method can be applied to the determination of the disintegration rate of a ^<60>Co source when areas under the two photopeaks (γ_1:1173 keV, γ_2:1332 keV), the sum peak, and the whole spectrum are measurable. It is difficult to obtain the exact photopeak areas through the use of a NaI(TI) detector because the two photopeaks overlap somewhat and a part of the area under Compton scattering of γ_2 also overlaps under the photopeak of γ_1. In this paper, a precise method to determine the photopeak areas is proposed, which is the elimination of Compton scattering by using a ^<22>Na spectrum. The sum-peak method is perfectly effective using the photopeak areas determined by this method.
