Analysis of Lattice Modulations in the Tweed Structure of an Fe-Pd Alloy by Image Processing of a High-Resolution Electron Micrograph

Computer-image processing of a high-resolution electron micrograph was carried out to extract information on the lattice distortions associated with the tweed structure of an Fe-Pd alloy which is a precursor phenomenon in the fcc-fct martensitic transformation. It was proven that the distorted and undistorted regions formed alternating layers parallel to {110} planes, as predicted by the continuum elasticity theory in a previous paper. The distorted layers contained tetragonally distorted strain centers with the tetragonality of about 0.97. This result coincides well with the 'embryo model' proposed previously by the present authors' group.
