A conventional bidirectional interdigital transducer (IDT) has recently been used in applications such as acoustic imaging, sensors and ultrasonic micromotors. However, no thorough analysis of the electroacoustic transduction characteristics of an IDT taking account of substrate surface loading due to liquid or gas has been carried out until now. Also, no attempt has been made to apply a unidirectional interdigital transducer (UDT) in these uses. In this paper, the operation of the UDT with liquid loading on a substrate surface is theoretically analyzed on the basis of the coupled mode and perturbation theories. The floating-electrode-type UDT for surface acoustic wave (SAW) placed on the interface between a 128° YX LiNbO_3 substrate and water shows a directivity of about 6 dB for the longitudinal wave radiating into water.
