Effects of Specimen Thickness and Orientation on Increase in Weight of Copper Single Crystals due to Heating in Zinc Vapor

Copper single crystals whose surfaces were parallel to {100}, {111} or {112} planes were heated at various temperatures in zinc vapor and effects of specimen thickness and orientation on the increase in weight by heating were studied. The apparent activation energies for zinc diffusion in copper calculated from the weight increase are affected by specimen thickness and orientation. Their values for {112} specimens of 0.25, 0.65 and 1.20 mm in thickness are 1.68, 1.69 and 1.70 eV, respectively, whereas those for the {100} and {111} specimens of 1.20 mm in thickness are 1.68 and 1.70 eV, respectively. An explanation of these differences is given in terms of the variation of the formation energy of a vacancy with stress caused by zinc diffusion.
