Effects of Specimen Thickness and Orientation on Weight Loss of α-Brass Single Crystals due to Heating in Vacuum

Alpha-brass single crystals whose surfaces are parallel to {100}, {111} and {112} planes were heated at various temperatures in vacuum and effects of their thickness and orientation on the weight loss during heating were studied. Dislocation arrangements are examined by an etch-pit technique and by an electron microscopy. The dimensional change of the crystals by heating is also examined. The apparent activation energy of zinc diffusion is affected by specimen thickness and orientation. Their values for the {112} specimens of 0.35, 0.65 and 1.20 mm in thickness are 1.65, 1.64 and 1.63 eV, respectively, whereas those for the 1.20 mm in thickness are 1.65, 1.64 and 1.63 eV, respectively, whereas those for the 1.20 mm specimens having {100} and {111} planes are 1.66 and 1.64 eV, respectively. These differences are quantitatively interpreted from stress caused by the zinc diffusion.
