Moire^' Fringes Due to Triple Lamellae of Polyethylene Crystals

Polyethylene crystals have a strong tendencey to form multiple lamellae. When the double lamellae are overlapped upon the third lamella without giving any deformation to one another, electron microscopic observation reveals either a pattern of dislocation networks plus double diffraction moire^' or a pattern of triple diffraction moire^', depending upon the nature of the double lamellae. In the former case, the moire^' fringes deviate by about half of their period on crossing the dislocation image. This can be proved to be due to the abrupt change in the difference between the phase angles of the transmitted and the scattered waves when they pass close to the dislocation line. In the latter case, the complex fringes generated can be explained theoretically as well as by an optically analogous experiment.
