The transparent effect in gaseous SF_6 has been experimentally studied by means of CO_2 laser radiation at 10.6μm. A beam of CW laser radiation of about 100mW is transmitted through an absorption cell of 1200mm long with SF_6. An increase in the transmitted power of CW laser radiation can be directly observed on an oscilloscope when SF_6 is excited by a pulse of Q-switched laser radiation of about 1KW cm^<-2>. The transmitted radiation power begins to increase with some time-delay as compared with the Q-switched pulse for excitation. This time-delay at the peak transmission becomes minimum at the pressure of SF_6 which gives rise to the maximum transmittance. The typical transmittance varies from 5 to 80%. The transmitted radiation power recovers to its original value with a decay time of 0.2 to 0.3μs at lower pressures of SF_6 after it reaches the maximum.
