Three-Dimensional Laser Doppler Scalar Velocimeters with Directional Non-Ambiguity

A method to resolve the ambiguity in the direction of the velocity while making measurements of scalar velocities is described. Non-self-and self-aligning optical systems are discussed. Even though the direction of the velocity may not be given, the magnitude of a three-dimensional velocity can be determined unambiguously from measurements of a set of four Doppler frequency shifts. Such an idea is verified experimentally using a self-aligning system with a moving test reflector.
