A new Doppler velocimeter system is described. Four illuminating laser beams at slightly different frequencies are brought together to a common focus in a small scattering volume. One photodetector collects the scattered light through a differential heterodyne system. Both the optical spectrum of the scattered light and the power spectrum of the photocurrent are derived from the light beating theory. Since the light beams can produce significant three bias-frequencies, three Doppler frequency shifts from these bias-frequencies are simply related to the distributions of three-dimensional velocity components in turbulence. For one scatterer system three-dimensional velocity components can be easily obtained from the measured three Doppler frequency shifts.
