• Strain Violet of Pharbitis nil flowers under continuous light when exposed to fluence rate greater than 30 W m^<-2> (15,000 lux) for 12 days or longer, but strain Kidachi does not flower. A high fluence rate promoted the accumulation of chlorogenic acid (CGA), pinoresinol-β-glucoside (PRG) and p-coumaroylquinic acid (COQ) in strain Violet, while in strain Kidachi the level of these compounds did not increase even under the highest fluence rate tested. The level of CGA, PRG and COQ in the cotyledons of strain Violet increased in pararell with induction of flowering under high-fluence illumination. Aminooxyacetic acid (AOA) inhibited flowering simultaneously suppressing the accumulation of CGA and PRG.
