The synthesis of glyceroglycolipids was studied in membrane and soluble fractions of Anabaena variabilis. The membrane fraction exhibited a high activity of UDPglucose: diacylglycerol glucosyltransferase, but practically no activity of UDPgalactose:diacylglyceroi galactosyltransferase. The glucosyltransferase activity was maximal at about pH 7.0 and dependent on Mg^<2+>. The Michaelis constant (K_m) for UDPglucose was 45×10^<-6> M. The soluble fraction catalyzed the incorporation of galactose from UDP-galactose into digalactosyl diacylglycerol. These in vitro results were compatible with the biosynthetic pathway of glyceroglycolipids in this alga that we previously elucidated on the basis of tracer experiments in vivo.
