Leaf extract of Sedum mexicanum, a typical CAM plant, decarboxylated ^<14>C-aspartate to form ^<14>C-alanine. The reaction was activated by the addition of 2-oxoglutarate and pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, while other keto acids had no effect on the reaction. The possible presence of aspartate 4-decarboxylase is discussed in relation to the participation of other enzymes concerned.
