A fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces japonicus can sporulate abundantly under the conditions of vegetative growth. Prior to sporulation, strong flocculation was observed. When the culture medium contained a sufficient amount of yeast extract, sporulation was completely inhibited. When the medium was cultured under light, flocculation occurred, but not zygote formation. Neither flocculation nor zygote formation was observed in the culture under complete darkness. The effect of light occurred even with short-period illumination at the early to mid logarithmic growth phase. The presence of a definite amount of yeast extract was essential for the phenomenon in question.
